Right-wing Americans love to call the US a “nanny state,” claiming that the federal government is always trying to pass laws regulating people’s lives. What the US really is, though, is a “puni-state” — a nation that thrives on vengeance and retribution, and that rejects the whole notion of rehabilitation or character change.

The class war that Thatcher unleashed in Britain is still raging. The rich have become richer, the poor decidedly more numerous and poorer. The decimation of workers’ rights and the unfettered power given to finance capital were hallmarks of Thatcher’s legacy and are to this day hallmarks of Britain’s current social decay...Margaret Thatcher was an intolerant militarist who always resorted to demagoguery, violence and starvation to get her political way. She was a criminal fascist who is now proclaimed to be a national hero.
Jimmy Carter calls Venezuelan elections the world's best. He does so for good reason. They shame America's sham process. Duopoly power controls things. People have no say.
Main Street America's in protracted Depression. Conditions go from bad to worse. More than ever, vital stimulus is needed. Obama's solution is force-fed austerity. In term one, he prioritized it. His FY 2014 budget offers more of the same.

..."[D]emocratic socialism" is such a fucking weenie phrase...As Jack Layton [said]...back in 2003, "I'm proud to call myself a socialist. I prefer it by far to democratic socialist." I would submit that that's because Jack knew a fucking weenie phrase when he saw one. It's a Cold War anachronism -- "My name's Charlie, and I'm a democratic socialist" is the sort of thing you'd say at a 12-step meeting for Totalitarians Anonymous: "It'd start innocently enough. I'd just paint a little picture of a tractor. Next thing I knew, I was blacked out, collectivizing farms..."

Canada’s social-democrats have responded to their unexpected success in the May 2011 federal election by lurching further right on every major political question...[I]t is seeking to demonstrate to the ruling class that the [New Democratic Party] is a “progressive” party akin to Barack Obama’s Democrats or the British Labour Party — a party of austerity and imperialist war — and thus eminently suitable to supplant the Liberals as the bourgeoisie’s “left” party of government.

"Today marks a historic step for [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered] equality in sports. The NHL and the NHLPA [NHL Players' Association] are stepping up to ensure that the hockey community is welcoming — not begrudging, not tolerant — welcoming to LGBT players, coaches, management or fans...The NHL has long had a slogan — "Hockey Is For Everyone." We will work alongside our partners in the NHL and the NHLPA to continue to make that true."
Societies perhaps are best judged by how they treat prisoners, their most disadvantaged and children.

The practice of attributing emotional distress and other phenomena to alleged cerebral/biological abnormalities rather than to social and psychological causes...is particularly problematic: "Standard psychiatric diagnoses… do not correspond to meaningful clusters of symptoms in the real world" and can counter-productively result in "further stigma, discrimination and social exclusion" for their recipients.
In summer 2010, sporadic protests began. In mid-February 2011, major ones erupted. Bahrainis want democracy. They want King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa al-Khalif's repressive regime replaced.
Making ordinary Brits bear burdens they can't afford is policy. Expect new imposed hardships ahead. Tories and Labour are in lockstep. It bears repeating. Britain's heading toward third world status. It's on a fast track toward getting there.

...[S]he destroyed the British manufacturing industry, she hated the miners, she hated the arts, she hated the Irish Freedom Fighters and allowed them to die, she hated the English poor and did nothing at all to help them...She gave the order to blow up The Belgrano even though it was outside of the Malvinas Exclusion Zone...When the young Argentinean boys aboard The Belgrano had suffered a most appalling and unjust death, Thatcher gave the thumbs-up sign for the British press.

The power elite, especially the liberal elite, has always been willing to sacrifice integrity and truth for power, personal advancement, foundation grants, awards, tenured professorships, columns, book contracts, television appearances, generous lecture fees and social status. They know what they need to say. They know which ideology they have to serve. They know what lies must be told...They have been at this game a long time. And they will, should their careers require it, happily sell us out again.

The current Canadian government has a thing for monarchy. In fact the Conservatives seem to like it better than democracy...[S]ince the "Arab Spring" democracy struggles that began in 2011 Stephen Harper's government has gotten down right scary, apparently supporting the divine right of kings over rule by the people.

An accurate reading of the events leading up to the present situation shows that North Korea is responding to US military escalation, and in particular to US refusal to negotiate. This includes a peace treaty to end the Korean War, any steps towards reunifying Korea, the end to the US occupation of South Korea and ending the annual month-long US-South Korean war maneuvers. Even today, it includes US refusal to talk in order to lower the tensions.

In 2002, Omar Khadr was captured by the Americans in Afghanistan. He was 15 years old. Eleven years later, he's still in jail, and his sentence runs for seven more years...Last year, the Conservative government was finally forced to repatriate Omar Khadr to Canada where he is now incarcerated in Millhaven maximum security penitentiary, without access to basic education and rehabilitation programmes.
Obama, Republicans and most democrats are in lockstep. They claim Medicare and Social Security are going broke. They lie saying so. When properly administered, both programs are sound. Modest adjustments only are needed to assure it.
Thatcherism represents Chicago School fundamentalism writ large. She’s gone. She won’t be missed. She launched a corporatist revolution. She headed Britain down a slippery slope toward unfettered predatory capitalism.

Human rights organizations shouldn’t be in the business of handing out awards, accolades and executive positions to human rights abusers...Resistance to war, occupation and mass incarceration includes opposing organizations that falsely claim to fight for human rights.
