When historians write the chapter on the current period of social democracy in Canada they might well conclude that the worst thing that happened to it was the 2011 election when the NDP got 103 seats it hadn't really earned...[T]he NDP could not cope with it. You could see it in the euphoria of election night -- the same night that the dismantling of the country...would begin in earnest with a Harper majority....After transforming the country in the post-war years into a modest social democracy...the NDP's false dream of actually coming to power threatens to wipe out its legacy.

Around 1,000 leading cadre of the regrouped Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) agreed to pursue a strategy of “people’s revolt” against the coalition government that includes their former allies, during their seventh general convention on January 9-14. The event was the first of its kind since a radical faction of the United Communist Party of Nepal (UCPN) split last June and retook the CPN-Maoist name that the party held during its decade-long insurgency that resulted in the ousting of the Nepali monarchy in 2007.

...[A] militarist atmosphere is being created in China. The theme is the imminence of war with Japan. In the past weeks, nearly every news report features the latest “provocation” by Japan over the disputed Diaoyu islands, for example, the fact that Japan discussed allowing its air force to fire warning shots to ward off Chinese aircraft. There are regular heated debates on various television “focus” programs, where participants call for war on Japan if any damage is done to Chinese vessels or aircraft.
Extremist Israel officials favor wealth, power, privilege and dominance. Tuesday's elections hardened fascism.

There is a prevailing myth that Canada's more than 600 First Nations and native communities live off of money...from the Canadian government. This myth, though it is loudly proclaimed and widely believed, is remarkable for its boldness; widely accessible, verifiable facts show that the opposite is true...Indigenous people have been subsidizing Canada for a very long time.

Recently, a movement of native peoples...calling itself Idle No More arose in Canada. The impetus for the movement is the Canadian government’s Omnibus Bill C-45. This bill seems designed to further abrogate treaty rights assigned to First Nations in order to expand resource exploration and extraction. The movement is slowly spreading to the indigenous nations of the northern United States, which have seen their lands ravaged numerous times over the course of history in the name of resource extraction.

The logic of the US policy of covertly co-operating with fundamentalist Sunni groups has reached its logical conclusion. There is now “good” al-Qa’ida on our side and “bad” al-Qa’ida fighting on theirs. In Syria, the former operates under the name of the al-Nusra Front, labeled by the US as the Syrian branch al-Qa’ida, and is the main fighting force of the rebel National Coalition. This is recognized by the US, Britain and many others as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

The family of Junior Seau, the former professional football player, is suing the National Football League (NFL). The suit claims that Seau’s suicide in May 2012 was the result of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) — a disease of the brain — caused by the violent hits he took as a linebacker...They are accusing the NFL of concealing and ignoring the evidence that showed the relationship between the violence of the game and traumatic brain injuries.
At perhaps the most perilous time in world history, exposing vital truths takes on greater urgency than ever.
Freedom requires committed activism. Liberation depends on working for what Israel denies. The alternative is more of what's too intolerable to bear.

...[The] weekend’s football games presented an orgy of militarism. From the armed forces ads, to the live shots of the 101st Airborne watching overseas, to the warplanes flying overhead, the unspoken slogan was, “If you like the NFL, you’ll just love the US military”...It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the tributes to King by the NFL don’t include the time when he said, “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.”

Last week, Chris Grayling, the minister of justice in the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government, announced plans to privatize 70 percent of the Probation Service in the UK, to be completed by spring 2015...All future prisons will be private.
On January 24, Obama nominated Mary Jo White as SEC head. "You don't want to mess with Mary Jo," he said. Others have different views.

American cyclist Lance Armstrong’s account of his years using performance-enhancing drugs and his more than ten-year campaign to intimidate and discredit critics says a good deal about professional sports and the broader social atmosphere...He apparently operated a type of mini-Mafia in cycling, bringing to the sport the very worst of American predatory entrepreneurship. There is in his story...something sinister and disturbing.
Dark Washington forces never quit. Nor do media scoundrels. Chavez is fair game. Since 1999, he's been maliciously targeted and maligned. Ill or well makes no difference.

“Heaven forbid if you are forced to live on when you want to die. I would wake up feeling increasingly bad knowing that [treatment] was all being paid for by the government...The problem won’t be solved unless you let them hurry up and die.”

Israeli election results hardened fascist rule. Dominant right-wing parties control 102 of 120 Knesset seats.
Israeli Arabs are enfranchised in name only. They may seek office and serve if elected. They have no policy-making authority. They're prohibited from challenging Israel's Jewish character. Arabs can't demand equal rights, privileges and justice.
Media scoundrels hype fear and hate. They regurgitate spurious allegations. They influence public opinion. The same pattern repeats. Hundreds of innocent victims are harmed. Younas Abdullah Muhammad is one of the best and brightest. He was arrested on bogus charges. He was pressured to accept plea bargain terms.
